Jay Babstock - Athlete
Recognized by the soccer community as a power player, Jay used his physical size along with an
exceptionally powerful shot to intimidate his opposition, particularly opposing goalkeepers. In addition
to a powerful shot, he also possessed a very good touch on the ball and a higher degree of accuracy than
most shooters. These skill sets positioned him to not only be a primary dead ball shooter from around
the penalty area, but also from a distance. His ability to score allowed him to always be near the top of
the scoring rate in all the leagues in which he played.
Although recognized as a striker, he was also a very effective defender as his physical size and touch on
the ball allowed him to take control of his defensive zone and keep opposing attackers at bay. His
dominance at both ends of the field has been recognized with all-star designations for both striker and
defender.

John Boland - Builder
John started playing soccer in 1970 with the Corner Brook Parks and Recreation program and quickly fell
in love with the game. He represented west coast teams in various senior competitions, including
Challenge Cup and the Atlantic Soccer league, which required travel to other Atlantic provinces.
But it was as a builder that John had his greatest impact.
John played, taught and coached many sports and activities as a player and physical education teacher,
but his passion has always been soccer, where he influenced the development of many high calibre
players that played within the local and provincial programs.
He was a long-time executive of the Corner Brook Senior Soccer Association and was later a founding
member of the Curling Athletic Association. The association was able to financially support local athletes
who were selected to play with provincial soccer teams and programs. To this day, many athletes that
had the opportunity to be coached, mentored and be part of John’s programs are involved in soccer
and/or some aspect of sport.

Hubert Beck - Builder
Hubert Beck has been part of the fabric of soccer for a lifetime - as a player, coach, club executive, and
author. As part of the team behind one of the winningest soccer franchises in the province, Hubert has
played a key role as an organizer, fundraiser and cheerleader in chief, serving more than two decades as
President of the St. Lawrence Soccer Association. As part of this work, he helped remove barriers and
enable players from St. Lawrence and the Burin Peninsula to focus on the game, keeping the region
prominent in provincial play and pushing other teams to match them. His advocacy has led to key
investments in the sport, including renovations to the local recreation centre where winter training
takes place, and the installation of new grandstands, media box, score clock and dugouts at venerable
Centennial Field.
Most recently, Hubert has chronicled the history of soccer in St. Lawrence and the Burin Peninsula,
writing his book “True Blue” in tribute to the storied history of Laurentian soccer.
A national silver medallist as assistant coach of the Laurentians in 2002, Hubert is a member of both the
St. Lawrence Soccer Hall of Fame and the Burin Peninsula Soccer Hall of Fame.

John Douglas - Athlete
John Douglas raised the bar as one of the most athletic and skilled goalkeepers on the provincial
Challenge Cup circuit.
John carried several teams to great heights by stopping near impossible shots and became known for his
penalty stopping prowess. One of the most memorable penalty shoot outs came in 2016 where he
stopped three PKs in a row to carry his team through to the Challenge Cup final. A very vocal keeper,
John deftly directed the Laurentians defence, netting seven provincial titles, and one national bronze
medal. John received multiple all-star and Top Goalie awards at the Challenge Cup level, and played five years

for Memorial University where he was recognized as an AUS all-star and CIS academic all-star.
After his outstanding performance winning silver at 2001 Canada Games, John was invited to try out
with the Montreal Impact. He also participated in Canada Soccer’s National Training Centre on three
occasions.
John is also a member of the Burin Peninsula Hall of fame.

Ray Molloy - Athlete
Ray’s introduction to soccer began with a perfect winning record for Burin Peninsula and All-
Newfoundland PeeWee and Bantam titles. His technical skills were recognized with his selection to the
NL Expo ’67 PeeWee team and later the 1973 Canada Games (NL) squad. His versatility in both forward
and defensive positions made him a valuable asset to the powerful Laurentian teams of the 1970s. Ray
has five Challenge Cup championship titles to his name, and was inducted into the St. Lawrence Soccer
Association Hall of Fame in 2002.

Paul Mullett - Builder
Paul is a true leader on and off the field, embodying the qualities of commitment and loyalty that make
a difference in team sports. He is also a unique individual, with four national gold medals - three as
assistant coach to the Holy Cross Jubilee Trophy team, and one as a player with the Holy Cross Men’s
national championship team in 1988.
Paul’s level of involvement in the soccer community is unmatched. Over the past several years he has
taken on increasing responsibilities with the St. John’s Soccer Club and King George V Park. Through his
efforts, he secured funding to build a new equipment shed at KGV, and then helped plan, coordinate
and execute key upgrades ahead of the 2025 Canada Games. As a coach, Paul has been engaged at
multiple levels, from youth to senior teams, and has dedicated the last ten years of his life to the Holy
Cross Jubilee team.
Paul’s peaceful demeanor belies a laser focus, game awareness and tenacity which has helped him
support the Holy Cross Jubilee team to ten provincial championships in a row. The team has won three
national championships in the last four years, further solidifying Holy Cross as one of the dominant
amateur women’s soccer programs in the country.

Susan Myrden - Athlete
Susan Myrden helped redefine what female soccer players are capable of, and how they compete.
Susan thrived in the highest levels of competition for 23 years, playing with Memorial University, St.
John’s all-stars, Feildians and Paradise and competing at club nationals six times. She was also a starter
with the 1997 Canada Games Women’s Soccer team which competed in Brandon, Manitoba.
Susan was a pioneer in how she played a wide position, constantly sprinting back and forth, pressing and
delivering whipping crosses that were a novelty in that era. She was combative, forward-thinking, and

physical but what really stood out was how great a team player she was and how she was respected in

all soccer environments.

A highlight of her playing career, was the opportunity to play for semi-pro team Dundee Football in the
Scottish Premier League while attending Stirling University in Scotland in 2000.
